Given the (in) famous internet based CAT glitches of 2009, it is no surprise that Prometric who manages CAT for the IIMs has divorced NIIT and found new allies in fast growing Education enterprise Everonn and assessment major Merit trac.
Fewer centres and more days seem to be the new mantra for glitch-free CAT administration this year.

Surprises galore @ IIMs

It’s not just the entrance test, CAT is throwing up changes, and IIMs are coming out with surprises in more ways. First, shocker came as IIMK has more women than men candidates in the 2010 batch (overall percentage of women candidates in the IIMs has increased). School marks mattered in the recent intakes.

Now news is that the composition of IIMC class of 2010 has more foreign students, an increase from 19 last year to 32 this year. The total batch size is 362 this year.

GMAT score is used to shortlist foreign applicants. Those who did under graduation abroad or chose to work abroad for a considerable time are required to present their GMAT scores for the admission process.

If candidates prefer leading B schools in India to top colleges in US or Singapore the trend is worth watching.

IIMC found a 5% increase in the number of candidates with work experience, the average duration of experience being 20 months.

The diversity in the batch is at an all time in IIMs. The candidates come with work experience form as diverse fields as investment banking, teaching, NGOs, scientists, government jobs, healthcare.

No doubt the trends are healthy in that there will be rich exchange of knowledge in addition to creating management professional for emerging sectors.

Is it the new mantra ?( if I can use another cliché)
‘The recession has perhaps accelerated my return’, revealed RM Turaga, now faculty at IIMA, then at Dartmouth, as a research associate. Professors like Turaga are more open about recession as part of the reason; though other B school faculty from gloal B schools and industry are also making a beeline to Indian B Schools( read reverse brain drain). A better social life, being closer home and relatives. A desire to do what the heart says ( not to forget the fact that discrimination in some form still hounds the Indian diaspora in most spheres in the West). Though one cannot but welcome the increasing representation of Indian origin expats in Obama’s dream teams, and beyond.
Yet another favourable factor is the govt’s decision to let foreign universities to do business in India. These professors with an international exposure will be much in demand. This is not to undermine the excellent body of work - research and mentoring- done by some of the Bschool teaching fraternity in reputed Indian B schools.
The new batches to top B schools are going to benefit immensely form this trend.
